Check out this article from "The Chronicle."
As I was wandering through the internet this week, I always stumble across new things and some of them excite me. For instance, finding new things about education and technology because when I go searching for them specifically, they seem to evade me. However, when I'm clicking around on links that lead me to really cool places, I get excited (yes, a bit dorky! :) )
I came across this article after clicking on something out of Google Reader. This article connects to the 7 Principles of Good Practice in that it can encourage contact between students and faculty (should either of them choose to befriend each other [principle 1]. It also can develop reciprocity and cooperation among students [principle 2]. Students might be talking about the athletic event and throw in a "hey, what about this class or that chapter or assignment." (This idea was discussed in the article). Students are very engaged because they are bringing up the topic and wanting to find out more or really form their understanding. I also think, at the very end of the article it talks about how students "want to be taught how they live their lives." This is something that has been around education for a while; teaching real world situations. Basically, "How does what you're teaching me, apply to the real world? Why does it matter?" I believe this line of thinking falls under the seventh principle "respecting diverse talents and ways of learning."
